Chad: German ambassador expelled from Chadian territory

A not very convenient situation in Africa has unfolded, more precisely in Chad. The German ambassador has been dismissed by the Chadian government. Chad’s Ministry of Communication stated that the German ambassador had shown a rude attitude and disrespected the country’s diplomatic customs. To this end, Jean-Christian Gordon Kricke, German Ambassador to Chad since 2021, has been given 48 hours to leave the country.

On the other hand, the German Foreign Office said that the reasons for the expulsion were unclear.”The reasons put forward by the Chadian government to justify the declaration of our ambassador in N’Djamena “persona non grata” are totally incomprehensible”: said a DW spokesman. The two parties seem to have different versions of the incident.

Reasons for Gordon Kricke’s expulsion

Chad has been ruled by a transitional military government coordinated by President Mahamat Idriss Deby since April 2021, when he initially promised to hand over power by October last year, but has since extended the deadline by two years. Then, Europe, precisely the German ambassador, expressed its displeasure by divulging derogatory words, words that lead to hatred, division and tribalism.

A source in the Chadian government therefore told the French press agency (AFP) that Kricke was considered too “interfering”, making confrontational remarks and not respecting other people’s traditions. He had been warned several times in the past on this subject, added the source.

Germany’s reaction to the expulsion

Faced with this situation, Germany retaliated against what it called “the unfounded expulsion of our ambassador”. Following this, Chad’s ambassador to Berlin, Mariam Ali Moussa, was summoned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and given 48 hours to leave Germany.

We’re sorry it had to come to this. Ambassador Kricke has carried out his work in N’Djamena in an exemplary manner and has advocated for human rights and the rapid transition to civic government in Chad”: said the ministry in a tweet.

The importance of respecting local laws

It is essential to respect the customs and laws of the country where you are an ambassador. It is unacceptable for any country to dictate its laws or way of life to another. Disparaging comments and interference in internal affairs can cause tensions and divisions within the population. It is therefore understandable that the Chadian government reacted in this way.

However, let’s also stress the fact that African countries have the right to react when their diplomats are mistreated or blocked in other countries. There are many cases where African countries have faced travel restrictions from foreign countries, prompting similar reactions.

It’s crucial to promote dignity and mutual respect between nations. Countries need to find peaceful solutions and avoid provocative comments that can aggravate tensions. International relations are based on mutual respect and understanding. The key is to cultivate these values to avoid unnecessary conflict. Dignity and mutual respect must be valued to maintain peaceful and harmonious international relations.
