A video is circulating on the Internet, revealing a scene of police violence that has deeply shocked the country. In this case, 17-year-old Nahel was violently stopped by a police officer while driving a car in the Paris suburb of Nanterre.
The despair caused by a life snatched from us early and unfairly
The brutality of the incident caused a stir among the French population. How is it possible that a country reputed to be modern and respectful of human rights has reached such a level of racism and cruelty towards its own citizens? These troubling questions are being asked today, leaving France outraged and saddened.
Nahel, only 17, was still a teenager. At this age, he’s still building himself up, learning from his mistakes and growing up. And yet, not even the slightest chance of redemption has been granted. It’s unfortunate that a teenager, whoever he may be, was not recognized as such by the police officer in question, unless his ego got the better of him.
It’s hard to imagine that if Nahel had been of a different origin or social background, he wouldn’t have been treated with such violence. In these circumstances, we would probably have given every possible chance to a young person from elsewhere. Why this difference in treatment? Why this lack of consideration for a teenager who deserved to be educated rather than brutally torn away from his family? The French police apparently take pleasure in mistreating certain citizens.
The first version reported by the police indicated that Nahel had tried to ram the officers with his car. However, a viral video posted on social networks quickly contradicted this version, and AFP authenticated the new information. Faced with the evidence, the authorities had to change their story. These events triggered four nights of violent unrest in Paris and other French cities, where demonstrators clashed with police.
The reaction of President Emmanuel Macron and the European Union
President Emmanuel Macron called on parents to protect their children by keeping them away from demonstrations. He also denounced the influence of violent video games on some young people, stressing the need to restore order and deal with violence. Additional measures will be taken by the Minister of the Interior to respond to these violent demonstrations.
“The case was referred to the courts immediately, and it is essential that those responsible be held accountable and that the truth come out. The nation must show its support for the victim and his family. Nothing can justify the death of a young man, and this tragedy must not be forgotten”, said Emmanuel Macron.
The European Union has condemned France for its institutionalized racism, pointing to a persistent problem within its institutions. This reaction highlights the need to reform these structures and combat systemic racism.

The indignant reaction of the public. The importance of staying calm
In the midst of these tragic events, rioting and looting have also broken out, making the situation even worse. It’s a sad fact that some people take advantage of these moments of chaos to commit acts of violence and theft. Citizens need to reflect on their relationship with their origins, and create a genuine bond of solidarity within their communities.
It’s time to reconnect with our origins
It’s crucial to remember that everyone has the power to make their voice heard constructively, without descending into anarchy. Violence and looting only serve to discredit legitimate demands, and lead to a loss of legitimacy. It is therefore essential to preserve peace and find alternative ways of fighting injustice.
Finally, it should be stressed that rights and opportunities in France will never be the same for everyone. It’s essential to recognize this reality and establish strong links with our origins, working to build strong, cohesive communities.
