Immigration restrictions in the UK: foreign students will no longer be able to bring their families with them
From January 2024, international students will be banned from bringing family members with them to Britain, unless they are on a postgraduate research program. The British government has signed a law restricting the entry of international students with dependents. Previously, students were allowed to bring civil partners, spouses, children under 18 and elderly parents requiring long-term care. However, this option will no longer be available to research-oriented postgraduates such as PhD students.
Why this law and who are its targets?
The adoption of this law has raised many questions. Why is the UK imposing this measure? Could it be that foreigners are arriving in their own countries to settle permanently? Could it be racism? Isn’t this an efficient way to stop the influx of immigrants into their country?
Firstly, this decision aims to tighten the profile of migrants coming to the country and reduce the overall migration rate. It is therefore a measure to restrict the immigration of certain categories of people. The government wants to limit the entry of dependents of foreign students, which previously included spouses, children and parents requiring long-term care.
Next, it’s interesting to note that this policy specifically targets foreign students and their family members, without including other groups of people. This can be interpreted as a strategy to control immigration based on specific criteria.

Suella Braverman, the woman responsible for passing this law

The person responsible for this law is Suella Braverman, who is Secretary of State for the Interior. The daughter of Christie Fernandes and Mootien-Pillay, she is of Indian origin, her parents having immigrated to the UK from Mauritius and Kenya in the 1960s. There’s no denying it. These are people with whom we share a history, similarities that are used to impose certain rules, this to limit mass uprisings.
What’s more, this measure to restrict the family members of foreign students is considered to be the most important one taken recently by any government to control immigration. The government hopes that this new rule will have a tangible effect and help to better protect the country’s public services.
Some support this policy by arguing that certain groups of people abuse the country’s public services. However, others criticize this measure, seeing it as a malicious and racist tactic to prevent certain people from entering. This situation suggests that Africa should invest and develop on its own continent, rather than seeking to migrate to other countries.
