Recently, African presidents visited Ukraine and then Russia, with the aim of facilitating dialogue between the Russians and Ukrainians to resolve their differences. This comes after the humiliating incident of a South African motorcade being stopped and searched at Warsaw airport in Poland for over 24 hours.
African presidents get involved in resolving the Russo-Ukrainian conflict
The African delegation, comprising the South African president, the Senegalese president, the Zambian president and the Egyptian prime minister, after meeting Ukrainian president Zelensky in Kiev, arrived in Moscow, where South African president Ramaphosa presented a 9-point roadmap for ending the hostilities. This initiative calls on both parties to de-escalate and aims to find a compromise to resolve this conflict, which has caused economic instability and considerable damage to several countries around the world.
African and Russian leaders reiterate political will to pursue dialogue despite Ukrainian president’s refusal to do so
However, it is important to note that implementing such a plan is extremely complex, as the Kremlin has stressed. Despite this, Vladimir Putin has expressed an interest in examining these peace proposals and has assured us that he will respect Africa’s position.
After its visit to Russia, the African delegation arrived in Kiev, Ukraine, where it held constructive discussions with President Volodymyr Zelensky. Putin shows compromising document signed by Ukraine and expresses disappointment with Ukraine
However, Vladimir Putin presented a document signed by Ukraine in Turkey, dating from last year at the start of the conflict. The document, entitled “Treaty on the Permanent Guarantee of Security Neutrality for Ukraine”, provides for Ukraine’s permanent neutrality to be enshrined in its constitution, with Russia, the USA, Great Britain, China and France as guarantors.
Putin said Ukraine was responsible for sabotaging the negotiations after withdrawing Kiev’s troops as promised. He expressed his disappointment at the Ukrainian authorities’ rejection of the treaty, questioning their commitment to past and future agreements and reiterating Russia’s willingness to continue negotiations.
War as business: the companies that profit from it don’t want the conflict to end
However, the presence of figures such as Boris Johnson, Nancy Pelosi, Anthony Blinken and Ursula von der Leyen during their respective visits to Ukraine seems to have influenced Ukraine’s decision to break off negotiations and continue the conflict.
It’s important to point out that war is a godsend for certain companies that profit from the sale of weapons and the reconstruction of devastated areas. The arms contracts amount to billions of dollars, and are profitable for the private companies involved, such as Boeing, Raytheon, Lockheed Martin and many others, who are unfortunately not prosecuted. This raises questions about the real motivations of certain players in prolonging this conflict.
Vladimir Putin’s position in this matter is open to debate. On the one hand, it provides concrete proof of the agreements signed and of Ukraine’s failure to meet its commitments.
