Concerns persist about data confidentiality and trust in Whatsapp

According to a recent video, “WhatsApp” is accused of opening the device’s microphone while a Twitter engineer was sleeping. The latter voiced his displeasure on Twitter, questioning the trust to be placed in WhatsApp as a program developed by its engineers. “WhatsApp” responded by claiming that access to the microphone was only allowed during calls, voice recordings or videos, with end-to-end encryption guaranteeing the protection of communications. He also stated that he had asked Google to investigate and remedy the problem.

“WhatsApp” raised doubts about the veracity of this accusation, suggesting that it was a bug wrongly attributed to Android in the privacy dashboard. The app claims not to have accessed the Twitter engineer’s microphone, and casts doubt on claims that Android lied about it.

WhatsApp’s inability to protect its users’ data leads to competition

Alongside this controversy, Elon Musk recently announced that Tweeter would be launching its own encrypted messaging service, seemingly in direct competition with other messaging apps, notably WhatsApp. This feature will enable users to block access to their messages, even for the company operating the service. However, this announcement raises questions about how much we can trust WhatsApp. Some wonder whether the company can really guarantee the confidentiality of users’ information and conversations, given its controversial past.

Should we trust these technology companies?

How secure is our data?

In addition, Facebook has for some time demonstrated its ability to block users without necessarily giving explanations. This has prompted us to open our eyes to the security of the bank accounts it once made available to users for online purchases. If it’s capable of blocking people for no reason at all, then it’s capable of blocking those bank accounts.

Similar concerns were raised in an earlier update to WhatsApp’s privacy policy, which prompted many users to leave the platform in favor of apps such as Signal. In fact, the update was designed so that users’ personal messages and phone calls could be read and listened to by “WhatsApp” itself. The aim was to make a profit by listening in and sharing confidential data.

The current controversy raises broader questions about the trust to be placed in large technology companies and the protection of users’ privacy. As WhatsApp continues to promote its encrypted messaging, it’s crucial for users to understand the implications of these services and explore potential alternatives that address their privacy and security concerns.

Africans must seek alternative solutions to win their freedom

Moya App: a secure application

However, there are alternatives to WhatsApp, including messaging apps created by Africans, such as Moya, which offer secure messaging and payment services. It’s free and allows you to work without megabits. However, many Africans prefer to use foreign platforms, despite privacy concerns, only to complain later. They prefer to turn to all those foreign applications that can exert total control over their lives, whereas home-grown companies need support.

It’s essential to remember that a company’s past actions can reveal a great deal about its intentions and its ability to respect its users’ privacy. Users are therefore invited to carefully consider the options available and make informed choices about messaging and the protection of their personal data.

In conclusion, it’s important to consider the alternatives available. Freedom is earned. It’s time for Africans to start supporting each other and setting a good example, so that Africa can move forward.
