The President of Kenya, William Ruto, recently delivered a poignant and courageous speech. He’s very brave and courageous, and it’s important to follow leaders who dare to say things as they are, despite the fear of being criticized.<\/p>\n

In his speech, the President expressed his indignation at the presence of 50 to 54 African presidents before a single president from elsewhere at international meetings, such as those between China and Africa or the USA and Africa. He considers it unacceptable for these presidents to appear before a single representative from another country, and proposes instead the creation of a commission or small group of African representatives to strengthen the continent’s power.<\/p>\n

By representing Africa with a single person, Westerners know that Africans will be much more united, so, to try and separate them, they’ll call each country to its side to negotiate. “Divide and conquer” is their strategy.<\/p>\n

Typically, these meetings are limited to photo opportunities, rather than real discussions and negotiations. Indeed, the time allotted for speaking, often just a minute and a half, does not allow for serious negotiations. Africa must be respected, and a commission or small group of African representatives must be set up at future meetings to assert the continent’s interests.<\/p>\n

The President also deplored the differential treatment of African presidents at international events, compared with that reserved for other heads of state. For example, at the funeral of the Queen of England, African presidents were treated with less honor and respect, unlike their foreign counterparts who were treated with great consistency, involvement and allegiance. Only the President of Ethiopia dared to speak out against this lack of respect.<\/p>\n
