His name is commonly associated with fear, torture, executions, repression and the expulsion of Asian populations from Uganda. Yet another narrative, advanced by some Ugandan authors and voices, portrays a leader who sought to regain control of the national economy, restore a form of African authenticity and break with relationships inherited from colonialism.

These two interpretations do not lead to the same assessment of his legacy. They differ over the reasons for his lack of formal schooling, the role of his family, the expulsion of Indians and Pakistanis, and the scale or interpretation of the violence committed under his rule. Understanding Idi Amin Dada therefore requires distinguishing between reported facts, accusations, political justifications and competing narratives.

Table of Contents

Toggle

Origins shaped by exclusion and colonialism

From boxing to the British colonial army

The 1971 coup and the image of a tyrant

The expulsion of Asians: economic sovereignty or a destructive decision?

An invoked pan-African project, a disputed record

Can he be judged as either a hero or a villain?

FAQ about Idi Amin Dada

Why did Idi Amin Dada expel Asians from Uganda?

How many people died under Idi Amin’s regime?

Was Idi Amin Dada opposed to colonialism?

Origins shaped by exclusion and colonialism

According to the most widespread account, Idi Amin Dada was born in 1924 into a large family. His father, Andreas Gabiré, from the Kakwa group, is said to have converted to Islam in 1910 and taken the name Amin Dada. His mother, Assa Atte, was described as a specialist in medicinal plants and traditional practices. Some accounts have characterized these practices as witchcraft or mysticism, claiming that they influenced Idi Amin’s future personality.

Another interpretation rejects this description. It instead portrays his mother as a herbalist or traditional healer, without applying labels such as witch or fortune-teller to her. Similarly, his parents’ separation is interpreted either as an event that profoundly affected his childhood or, more simply, as the situation of a child whose parents had divorced.

The question of his schooling is also central to conflicting narratives. One version explains that he was not educated because of discrimination against Nubians, the group to which his maternal family was linked. Another maintains that primary education was mainly accessible to children who converted to Catholicism. As a Muslim, Idi Amin would therefore have been excluded from the school system unless he changed his religion.

These versions do not merely describe a difficult childhood: they raise the broader issue of access to education in a colonial, religiously structured and socially hierarchical context.

From boxing to the British colonial army

Idi Amin drew attention because of his imposing physical stature: 1.91 metres tall and around 100 kilograms, according to the account provided. He became Uganda’s boxing champion several times. He was then recruited into the British colonial army.

He was sent to Kenya as part of operations against the Mau Mau uprising. The description of this movement is itself a matter of language and perspective. In the colonial view, the Mau Mau were described as rebels or terrorists. In an anti-colonial reading, they were indigenous Kenyans demanding freedom and self-rule.

In 1959, Idi Amin reached the rank of afande, presented as the highest rank then open to Black people in the British colonial army in Africa. After Uganda gained independence in October 1962, Milton Obote appointed him deputy commander of the young Ugandan army.

The 1971 coup and the image of a tyrant

According to the best-known version, Idi Amin seized power in a coup in January 1971 after learning that Milton Obote was allegedly planning to arrest him in a case involving the misappropriation of army funds. His regime was then described as authoritarian and brutal.

Serious accusations are associated with him: repression of opponents, torture, executions and massacres. The Nile Mansion Hotel in Kampala is notably presented as a centre for interrogation and torture. The most widely circulated account also states that officers from the Acholi groups, connected to the former government, were executed.

The human toll is subject to estimates and controversy. The dominant version cites more than 300,000 deaths under his regime. Other voices challenge this figure, arguing that it was exaggerated for political or economic reasons. They do not deny the murders and executions, but offer another interpretation of the violence, notably by linking it to clashes with groups opposed to his rule.

The contrast between these accounts calls for caution: recognizing the existence of accusations of political violence does not mean overlooking debates over their number, context and treatment in historical narratives.

The expulsion of Asians: economic sovereignty or a destructive decision?

Idi Amin’s best-known decision concerns the expulsion, with a 90-day deadline, of Asian foreigners living in Uganda. More than 60,000 people are cited. Many held British passports, and a large number travelled to the United Kingdom when the deadline expired.

In the most critical interpretation, this measure was an act of discrimination against a community essential to the country’s economy. Following the nationalization of a significant share of economic activity and the departure of Indians and Pakistanis, Uganda is said to have experienced a worsening crisis: bankruptcy, inflation above 200%, debt of 320 million dollars, neglected agriculture, factory closures and widespread corruption.

In the other interpretation, Idi Amin was seeking to respond to an economic situation inherited from colonialism. Indian and Pakistani communities, which had arrived in particular in connection with the construction of the railway link between Nairobi and Kampala, are said to have held a dominant position in trade and industry. According to this interpretation, part of the wealth produced in Uganda was sent to India or England instead of supporting the national economy.

Supporters of this reading argue that these communities received more favourable treatment than indigenous people under the colonial order and formed relatively closed economic networks. They therefore present the expulsion as an attempt, albeit a radical one, to transfer shops and businesses to Ugandans.

However, the same account acknowledges that the method used was questionable and that Idi Amin did not have, even according to his own defenders, the training or experience needed to carry out such a complex economic transformation. The intention of economic emancipation and the concrete consequences of the policy thus appear as two inseparable aspects.

An invoked pan-African project, a disputed record

Idi Amin broke relations with the United States, Great Britain and Israel. For his supporters, or for authors who rehabilitate certain aspects of his actions, these breaks reflected a desire for African sovereignty: liberation not only of territory, but also of the economy, the mind and culture.

This interpretation stresses that he sought to develop Uganda, strengthen the confidence of indigenous people and limit dependence on external groups or powers. It also criticizes international narratives for placing strong emphasis on the crimes attributed to Idi Amin while giving less attention to other forms of colonial violence in Africa, such as those cited against the Mau Mau in Kenya.

Conversely, the dominant narrative emphasizes the gap between the rhetoric of independence and the results of the regime: political violence, economic disorganization and the country’s isolation. Idi Amin was ultimately driven from power in 1979 by foreign forces. He died in Saudi Arabia in 2003, after several attempts to return.

Can he be judged as either a hero or a villain?

Reducing Idi Amin Dada to either a hero or a villain obscures the complexity of the narratives surrounding his rule. It is possible to observe that his rhetoric of economic sovereignty and a break with the colonial legacy resonates in some Ugandan and African interpretations. It is equally necessary to take into account the accusations of repression, executions and torture, as well as the economic collapse attributed to his decisions.

His legacy therefore remains contested. It sets a memory of authoritarian rule against a memory of national assertion. Between these two narratives, the issue is not only the judgment made about one man: it also concerns how African history is told, by whom it is told and from which experiences.

FAQ about Idi Amin Dada

Why did Idi Amin Dada expel Asians from Uganda?

According to the dominant narrative, he ordered their departure as part of a policy of nationalization and economic recovery. According to an alternative reading, he believed that Asian communities dominated the economy and transferred part of the wealth outside Uganda. The economic consequences of this decision are presented as very severe.

How many people died under Idi Amin’s regime?

The figure of more than 300,000 deaths is put forward in the most widespread account. Other authors challenge this estimate and consider it exaggerated. The source material examined does not make it possible to decide conclusively between these assessments.

Was Idi Amin Dada opposed to colonialism?

Accounts favourable to his actions portray him as a defender of economic self-reliance, African authenticity and a break with former colonial powers.
